Party Post Number 14

Maureen Child is the author of more than ninety romance novels and novellas in several different genres. A five time Rita nominee, one of Maureen’s books was made into a CBS-TV movie, The Soul Collector.

Hey, happy publishing, Tessa!! I’m delighted to be here to share in the festivities!

Changing from unpublished to published is a big shift! But changing genres can be just as exciting. Which I found out for myself just last year. I decided I wanted to do something different. (Well, different for me, anyway!)

And this June, that something different will be released by NAL Trade. The title of the book is MORE THAN FIENDS...and I had such a good time writing it, I’m writing its sequel right now.

MORE THAN FIENDS is a first person/paranormal/urban fantasy/funny romp whose pitch line was Buffy the Vampire Slayer Meets the Gilmore Girls.

First person was a whole new ball game for me and it made me think about writing in a way I hadn’t for several years. I was forced to really look at the body language of characters, because I was only in my heroine’s POV. Very strange and yet, really exciting, too. It made me look at my job in a new light and find new ways to get into my characters’ heads.

Usually, I’m not a big fan of change, but every once in awhile, it really is fun! So, post a comment here and the winner I draw will receive an Advanced Reading Copy of MORE THAN FIENDS!

Tell me what you think...Is there room for both dark AND funny paranormals? And which do you prefer???

Welcome Maureen!

More Than Friends sounds fabulous! I've been finding that some of the dark paranomal is getting really...well...dark. Almost disturbing.

I have a couple of other friends who love their paranormal a little lighter and funnier, too.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets The Gilmore Girls, huh, that sounds like so much fun! :)
Is there room for both dark and funny paranormals? Heck yeah, lol. There's so many different genres now a days and such a combination of some that I think there's room for anything :)

Thanks, Tessa! Glad to be here! And I'm with you on the 'a little too disturbing' thing.

Ali...the book really was fun. And I know you're right about all of the subgenres right now!

Hey Maureen -- I love light and funny paranormals! Of course, I love the dark ones too. ;-) There should be room for both, don't you think?

(Hi Tessa! I've heard amazing things about your first book. Can't wait to read it!)

My favorite genre is paranormal and love vampire stories so your new book sounds like my kind of read. I enjoy the lighter paranormal reads to the darker.

Tetewa......Thanks! I'm glad to hear you like BOTH funny and dark paranormals!

I love writing them. They're just so much fun..building the world, playing with super powers!

I think there is definitely room for funny in paranormals. I haven't read many paranormals but I don't think they would be as appealing to me if they were too dark.
I have read most of your Desires and I have Eternally in the TBR pile. A while ago I read Catch a Fallen Angel by an author named Kathleen Kane. I have to tell you that was a wonderful book.

I think there is room for dark AND funny paranormals. I like them both. Katie MacAllister's Aisling Grey series is great if you like the ones with humor! MORE THAN FIENDS sounds really good!

Hi Maureen!

There is definitely room for both the dark and funny paranormals. What I enjoy at any given time depends on my mood.

Christa! Wow, you made my day with the nice words for my alter ego, Kathleen Kane! I did really enjoy writing those books! And thanks also for being a devout Desire reader--and let me know what you think of Eternally!

Carol! Glad to know you're a fan of Katie MacAlister! She LOVED MORE THAN FIENDS and gave me a fabulous cover quote for it! I love her books.......

Minna! How cool is that that you read my books in Finnish?? Thank you!

And Maureen!! Great name! =) Thanks for that! I'd like to think there was always room for humor!

More than Friends sounds really good. I just read Nevermore and I loved it. You first hooked me with Eternally and so I bought Nevermore right away. I don't have a problem with lightening up paranormals. It is good to have variety even in a specific genre.

Cherie! Thank you! That's so nice. I'm delighted that you loved ETERNALLY enough to run out and get NEVERMORE! I just finished my next Nocturne, called VANISHED, starring Rogan Butler, the Irish Guardian. Great fun there, boy!

Annie, Thanks! I love the title too. and the sequel is already called A FIEND IN NEED....

Ali, Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets The Gilmore Girls has me hooked too!

Christa, count me in as another big fan of Maureen's Desires. I'm waiting (impatiently) for Thirty Day Affair to arrive. Millionaire of the Month looks like a great continuity.

Kate, you're too sweet:)

Hi Maureen! Yes, I do think there is room for both, abolutely!! I am currently reading one that is pretty dark, however, it is in the 1st person POV. We get her fun and witty thoughts at the same time crazy things are happening.

I believe there is room for dark and funny. I use to watch Gilmore girls and the reruns. Your book sounds like one I would enjoy.

More Than Fiends sounds great! Will have to pick it up. Love Buffy & Gilmore.

I like the lighter side of paranormal but seems so hard to find lately since the darker side seems to have taken off more.

Tessa, you're a sweetie! Millionaire of the MOnth was a fun continuity to do with my friends (even if I did get the Elephant Man on my cover! sigh)...and I hope you like MORE THAN FIENDS...

Tammy.......what book are you reading now?? Gotta know. I love a good funny heroine even when the story's dark!

Karen.... I used to LOVE the Gilmore Girls, until they started screwing with the characters! ah well. And I still believe Buffy was one of the best written shows ever!

Lis, you're so right! Comedies always have a harder time. Take the Oscars, for example. Comedies never win Best Picture!! Humor gets no respect! LOL

Congratulations on your new book! A book which sounds fabulous. There are so many catagories to write under these days and bending rules to blend them is something that is unique and appealing to alot of people. So yes, there is definitely room for both the dark and the light side together. In fact most of the authors I read do blend those sides. I think its great when a author can break up a dark moment with a well placed bit of fun. It catches a person off guard and makes the book that much more enjoyable.

Wow, Maureen ninety books! Congratulations on that! I've read a bunch of them. I'm going to have to catch up. Dark and funny is a good combination. I like both.

Hi Maureen,
The book is Full Moon Rising by Keri Arthur. I am only about 150 pages in, but enjoying it a lot. I have heard the later books in the series get darker, I am hoping she still retains her wittiness.
