Party Post Number 24

When Denise Rossetti was a little girl, she had an aunt who would tell her the most wonderful fairy stories - all her own creation. Denise grew up, as little girls do, but the love of stories has never left her.

These days, she keeps busy writing erotic romance for Ellora's Cave. Denise tends to wave her hands around a lot, which can be unfortunate if the tale she's telling happens to have explosions in it!

CELEBRATING ALL THE ANGLES

Life’s funny, isn’t it? You’re plodding along, perhaps you’re happy, perhaps you’re not, but out of the blue – SWOOSH, SWERVE! – the world as you know it takes a right-angled turn. On the other hand, sometimes we take the controls ourselves and wrench that wheel around to where we want to go.

Looking back, I was catapulted me into writing both ways. I’d always said, “One day I’ll write a book.” But I didn’t. *grin*

But five years ago – I don’t quite know why, except that I wasn’t happy at the time – something in my head went CLICK! (My head is a very loud place. In fact, anywhere within a few feet of me is noisy.) Seven months later, I finished that first novel. It lives in the sock drawer.

Last year, I signed with Ellora’s Cave to write erotic romance. I’ve been having a ton of naughty fun ever since. Because I’m me, I like to celebrate all life’s angles, and this one was a beauty! Being the original Material Girl, I sashayed right out and bought a charm bracelet. Every time I finish a new book, I buy another charm to represent it.

So far, I have a dragon for Gift of the Goddess (take a look at the cover), a book (actually it’s an encyclopedia) for Tailspin (you’d know why if you read it) and the laughing/crying comedy/tragedy masks for my story Come Howling in the latest Ellora’s Cavemen anthology. It’s about a banshee. She’s kinda loud too. Hmm, I discern a theme here…

I intend to buy lots and lots of charms. I mean it.

The most recent and most fabulous right-angled turn in my life has been a contract with one major print publisher for a four book fantasy series and a second for an erotic novella. To celebrate, I bought a pair of the highest, tartiest, sluttiest heels you’ve seen in your life. In red. Scarlet. With velvet bows. Go see – www.deniserossetti.com/bio. You’ll need to scroll down a tad. They just about give me a nose bleed and wreck my back, but I DON’T CARE! They’re my celebration!

I buy stuff cos I’m made that way. Sad, but true. What have you (or someone you know) done to celebrate the wonderful right-angled turns life has sent your way?

The best story wins a free download of any of my books. They’re listed here, with excerpts - www.deniserossetti.com. Two runners-up win signed, oversized, full colour postcards of my three covers, a full set of gorgeous guys. They’re on the same page, click for a bigger image. But put the coffee down first, okay?

Denise, because I've had a day at the computer, my eyes are getting a bit unfocused. I thought your post was called Celebrate all the Angels. And you know, we should celebrate angles. But we should celebrate angels too - there are so many people who make my writing life full of friendship and inspiration. And I'm delighted to include you among my angels (hope you don't mind - although I don't think any self-respecting angel would get away with those fabulous shoes. They're devil material if I ever saw it!). Congratulations on all your success. You absolutely deserve it.

Congratulations on your new contract! I'll be watching for your books to hit the book shelves. And I have to say that the heels are stunning.
As for a right-angled turn in my life, well I recently busted a fear of mine of going out on stage to play electric guitar in front of a live audience. As an shy lady, that was a big break for me. So to celebrate my friends and family went with me to pick out and put a down payment on a motorcycle. I've always wanted one. I have friends ready to help me customize it and everything. I cannot wait until I finish the payements and the bike is mine.

Hi Denise! I am a big fan of ebooks. I started reading them when my youngest was colicky, and I sat rocking her in the dark. The Pocket PC I had was perfect for reading in the dark.

As far as celebrating life's turns? I think I posted on a previous blog, books are my rewards. My son gets books as well. So, yeah, between the two of us, we buy way more books than we can read....and we love it!

I am still working on my daughter, she is still young yet:)

Yummy cover btw!

I'd love to be an angel - if I can bring my naughty shoes with me! And you're right, the friends I've made through writing are a gift from heaven. So, right back atcha, my dear!

Thanks Helen. Sorry to hear about the bung knee. And yes, that would have to be the best cover a newbie author ever got. Talk about lucky!

Denise,

I can't wait to see those shoes in person. Promise you'll wear them to the RWAustralia conference this year!

As for celebrations, call me predictable but a good bottle of bubbly works for me, every time.

So glad you're celebrating. You deserve it!

Hi Tessa!

Super congrats on the release of Black Widow Bride. Savour every gorgeous yummy moment, won't you?

And yep, contests are a great thing for aspiring authors. Great feedback, a bit of hide-toughening and the thrill of meeting people with the same obsession as you. Perfect! (And we're all still obsessed, as everyone can see!)

Thanks for inviting me to the party!

Ladyvampire,

Congratulations on conquering your stage nerves. That is an incredible achievement.

Every now and then, I tell myself I ought to try a parachute jump. And then I say, "Nah..."

And now you're gonna be a biker chick! Waaay cool. Boy, I'm impressed!

Denise, I have thoroughly enjoyed Gift of the Goddess and Tailspin. The idea of rewarding yourself with charms for your bracelet is fabulous as is that wonderfully wicked pair of shoes!

I had never really expected to marry. When I did, one of the things that was given to us to celebrate the union (not my instigation, but friends who knew us well) was a flight lesson. To get the full effect of the idea you would have to know that I didn't even know how to drive at the time. I am sure we could have surreptitiosly let the expiration date of the lesson slide by, but... We did it while on the honeymoon so this could potentially have been a very short marriage. My husband and I considered it something of a leap of faith.

Happily we are still here to tell the tale. Fortunately, the honeymoon was in Scotland so I could fortify my beloved with single malt both before and after the event. :)

A flight lesson, lamb! How daring (read here: I'm a chicken). Ladyvampire, a motorbike! How fabulous!(but ditto on the chicken stand, lol)
Which brings me to...Denise, you've made me think! Whenever something great has happened - is happening - I seem to be too busy with "life" to really sit down, relax and enjoy it. I did, however, let my hair way down recently with some fabulous writing friends, and, yes - Ann will testify - champagne was involved, lol. That celebration would have been even more perfect if my other "angels" had been there.

Denise, mega congrats on your wonderful successes, and FABULOUS shoes. I want them!!

Hi Tammy
Yep, e-books are great. The only downside, IMO, is that you can't read them in the bath!

Hey Annie
Good to see you here! Congratulations on all your successes - you're going from strength to strength. And yes, I'll be wearing the hussy heels at the conference for sure. I won't be hard to spot - I'll be the one hobbling along trying to look sophisticated! *g*

Little Lamb,
How lovely to hear from you! A flight lesson - OMG! Your husband sounds like a real hero. (You too, BTW) You couldn't get mine up there for life nor money. But I DO love him. ;-)

Hi Robbie, Robbie...

Is there an echo in here? *g*

I think you should BUY something - something real, and uh, glittery, you know? To celebrate all your triumphs. I still remember how fab and sexy you looked dolled up as Marilyn at the RWA costume party. So go for the diamonds are a girl's best friend thing.

Everyone, she looked STUNNING!
